Does Music Soothe the Savage Beast?

I first became interested in the effect music has on learning when I took a graduate course in brain based teaching and learning. Through this course I learned of the works by Dr. Eric Jensen as well as Patricia Wolfe and became intrigued by the complexity of all that brain based teaching and learning entails. Dr. Jensen has taken the latest scientific findings on how the human brain works and applied those findings to teaching and learning. Dr. Jensen has many practical teaching methods that his more than a decade of research has shown to be effective. One thing that I have concentrated on that he has discovered through his research is that the environment teachers create for their students is essential to learning and memory retention. With regard to this finding, he tells that students can not learn well in a stress filled environment and he gives many techniques for teachers to use to lower stress and help students obtain a state of relaxed alertness which is prime for learning.

Being a musician myself, albeit not a great one, I wanted to take my interest in brain based teaching a step farther. I decided to find out if music would have an effect on the negative behaviors of high school students where I was teaching. I wondered if music would have a calming effect and, therefore, lower the number of negative behavioral incidents. After two years of action planning research, I concluded that music can have a positive effect on the behavior of high school students. I decided to publish my research findings so that students, other educators and administrators could benefit from my findings.

YOUTHS TAKE A CRACK AT
DNA

The Forensic lab has arrived in middle and high school classrooms.

Students cut DNA samples with enzymes to help detect which of four samples match in the crime scene of a young woman’s murder.

State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook provides this assignment out to city schools.

Today, the murder mystery is a science project for 12 high school students from Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, New York.

Years ago, more than 3,000 middle and high school students, according to
Dr. David Bynum, the project director are interested in the program, Biotechnology Teaching Laboratory at Stony Brook.

The goal of the Stony Brook program is to introduce their students to biotechnology and molecular biology.

The earlier the study, the earlier students have the knowledge of technical science.

Amongst many, programs like the above is attracting young students even more to become a Forensic Scientist.
