He introduced the theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. The Life Of Darwin, 1809-1882 is a fascinating 595 pages commemorative biography, including letters and an autobiographical chapter, about the life of Charles Darwin, written by his son Francis.

This expedition under captain Robert Fitz Roy took place from December 27, 1831 to October 2, 1836. Fitz Roy sought companion for a second journey round the world, young student Charles Darwin took the opportunity and boarded the ship. He had to keep a daily log as well as detailed notebooks of his finds, and a diary which became his journal. The Beagle sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and carried out surveys around the coasts of South America, returning via Tahiti and Australia having circumnavigated the Earth. While the expedition was originally planned to last 2 years, it lasted almost five. Darwin's publication of the journal made his reputation as a scientist and author. His notes with detailed observations of plants and animals was the basis for his theory of evolution by natural selection in his world-famous work "The Origin of Species."
