Sponges are an ancient group of invertebrate animals whose basic body plan has remained unchanged for millions of years. There are no distinct organs or tissues, digestion is intracellular with excretion and respiration being by diffusion. The classification of sponges presents many problems as they share very few characteristics with other animals. Some zoologists consider them to be outside the line of evolution which led to other animals, the metazoans. Consequently, sponges may be labeled as parazoans (Gr. παρα- beside; ζωον - animal). This essential reference provides a complete list of all the known species of sponges (to the end of 2007), along with a key to their synonyms. At the front of the book there is an outline classification to guide you to the location of unfamiliar species, followed by a synopsis of the phylum. This is followed by the checklist and synonym key. Finally, there is an outline classification of the animal kingdom and a brief bibliography. www.trw-books.com

A Dictionary for Vertebrate Zoology

A Dictionary for Vertebrate ZoologyA Dictionary for Vertebrate Zoology (book)

Print: $39.97

With over 14,500 entries, this dictionary is the most comprehensive reference work of its kind available today. It has arisen from the realization, born during undergraduate days, that there is a need for a zoological work that combines the concise presentation of a dictionary, a brief etymology and the inclusion of the general terms one would meet during a zoology course. Vertebrate zoology is not, of course, studied in isolation, therefore the more common terms from the fields of animal behavior, biochemistry, cytology, ecology, evolution, genetics, palaeontology, physiology, systematics and zoogeography have been included. There is comprehensive taxonomic coverage of every family, and many species that are of particular interest. Plus appendices giving an outline classification of the animal kingdom and providing an overview of geological time the major events. This dictionary is the standard reference and will be invaluable to everyone with an interest in zoology. For more details see www.trw-books.com
