The sad truth is that historically more projects have failed than have not failed. There have been many studies which detail specific reasons for project failure but most can be summed up to lack of planning and lack of leadership. The old alchemy of implementation project management needs to change from an art to a new science that is success driven and replicable. This new approach requires new leaders with new visions. The new project leaders must be skilled and educated. They must possess inherent abilities to lead under duress as well as understand and communicate at any level in an organization. They must be born leaders and schooled tacticians with appropriate implements at their disposal and resources at the ready. The new project leaders must accept change, embrace change, advocate change, instigate change, react to change, and even incite change in the team and the organization. Methodologies must be comprehensive, yet flexible and are not like recipes that can be exactly followed. There are enough tips and techniques in this book to season any project with a sweet taste of success. Included are Tom’s Tenets for Project Success and Tom's Tenets for Project Failure that will enliven any project management discussion.
