Take Sylvia's Case
War correspondents sometimes lose their nerve. Sylvia is no exception. An ambush kills her three colleagues. She barely escapes with her life. Her body is shattered. Single, middle-aged, demoralized from several failed love affairs, her career in jeopardy, Sylvia’s perspective has become fear driven and distorted.
A lover from twenty-five years back, the most important man in her life, unaccountably resurfaces, adding to her sense of crisis. And worse, her only friend suddenly dies from cancer. Sylvia has no one to confide in. She is forced to examine the premise of her life entirely on her own. Faulty assumptions and conclusions abound. She tells her story to an invisible "counselor," weaving past and present to a climactic and satisfying ending which surprises her and the reader.

Open the River
A year after his son's death, the author turns to sailing as a means of alleviating his grief.
The narrative follows his learning the art of sailing and his initial voyage.
There is an inner journey as well. It takes the reader along a spiritual path that entails the connection the author, his wife, and his son had with a Native American spiritual teacher.
Life's most heartbreaking tragedy, the death of one's child is explored in ways perhaps not ordinarily perceived as grieving.
This work was written in 1993, now published for the first time.

AFGA: A Mystery Set in Harrisonburg
Meet Afga Somerset, former James Madison University student and one time promising poet, now a town character getting nowhere in his life, only deeper into his head. But when his best friend is found dead, presumably murdered, Afga becomes the center of a police investigation, and his inner/outer life shifts into high gear.
Meanwhile, long-standing preoccupations continue to haunt Afga's life: his emotional battle over a failed marriage; his ex-wife's new lesbian romance and its impact on her eight year old daughter for whom Afga has become the official baby-sitter; and above all else, the surreal dialogue he conducts with a father who disappeared long ago. All leading to discoveries that solve more than one mystery, while creating a few more.
AFGA is a picaresque novel with serious as well as comic overtones.

Berkeley Tales
These stories were written during the early 70's.
I lived in that town a number of years.
Eventually found myself sharing the life of the hippie element.
Spent my days on the street. Made jewelry from horse shoe
nails. Keenly observed the life around me. The result became
Berkeley Tales. Twelve pieces comprise the collection.
1st paperback edition now out of print.
To the casual observer most of the street people came across as misfits or worse just downright freaks.
But actually, like everyone else in those years, they were people aching to share love generally
stumbling into unusual ways of finding how to do it. Myself included

True Nature Spirits and Ghosts
True Nature Spirits and Ghosts was written and illustrated by my son Sorrel Bergman when he was 6, 7, and 8 years old. I have tried to present the loose pages in chronological order. He told me about his experiences at the time and then I pestered him until he recorded them on paper. I didn’t know what to think about fairies before I observed Sorrel’s encounters with them, but then I became a believer.
Sorrel taught himself to read and write and type during the summer following 1st grade. We were living in a new age spiritual community. For Vitae and me it took up much of our time and energy so that Sorrel spent his days alone reading, writing, and drawing.
