Print: $25.00 Robert M. Price has been studying and teaching (even preaching on) the Gospel of Thomas for many years. It has gradually become clearer and clearer to him. But at the same time, he has been mindful of the danger of making it too clear, reinterpreting it and whittling it down to size just so it won't seem so impenetrable and frustrating. In his commentary on the fifth gospel, Price preserves the balance: he shows how the text need not strike us as strange at all and yet how alien its assumptions are to our way of thinking.
While this book takes note of the opinions of various specialists on the Gospel of Thomas, it does not, like some of their books, choke on its own methodology. The result is a plain-spoken interpretation of this intriguing text against the ancient background of its writer, as far as we can reconstruct it. And of course, no matter how many books on the Gospel of Thomas one has read, one will assuredly find new insights here.

Print: $25.00 Edwin Johnson (1842-1901), In Antiqua Mater Johnson examines a great variety of sources related to early Christianity "from outside scripture", coming to the conclusion that there was no reliable documental evidence to prove the existence of Jesus Christ or the Apostles. He asserts that Christianity had evolved from a Jewish Diaspora movement, he provisionally called the Hagioi. They adhered to a liberal interpretation of the Torah with simpler rites and a more spiritualized outlook. Hagioi is a Greek word meaning "saints", "holy ones", "believers", "loyal followers", or "God's people", and was usually used in reference to members of the early Christian communities. It is a term that was frequently used by Paul in the New Testament, and in a few places in Acts of the Apostles in reference to Paul's activities.

Print: $25.00 As a young theologian Schweitzer published The Quest of the Historical Jesus (1906), by which he gained a great reputation. In this book, he interpreted the life of Jesus in the light of Jesus' own eschatological convictions. Schweitzer demonstrated that 19th century "liberal lives of Jesus" produced by those who sought to reimage Jesus through historical study were reflections of the authors' own historical and social contexts. This work effectively ended for decades the Quest for the Historical Jesus as a subdiscipline of New Testament studies, until the development of the so-called "Second Quest," among whose notable exponents was Rudolf Bultmann's student Ernst Käsemann.

Print: $25.00 What is a gospel? And why do I consider the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar to be one? Isn't a gospel by definition one of the books of the Bible? If so, then nothing written in recent centuries could be counted as a gospel. This is because the "canon" of scripture (the official table of contents) was settled back in the fourth century C.E. Who settled the matter? Who decided what writings should be included, excluded? Various synods of bishops meeting here and there in North Africa and Rome. Who gave them the authority to make such a decision? Keep in mind that the Bible is a book many people have lived by and died for, believing the book to be the written Word of God. But no one ever claimed that the voice of God suddenly rang out and told the bishops which books to include. Being an editor of fiction anthologies myself, I know this would make the selection process a lot simpler. But, no, like me, the bishops made their own judgment calls. Did they make the right choices?
