This personal memoir, tracks a two year journey recounting the ever increasing cases of financial abuse amongst our seniors and elderly. It is the most common form of elder abuse, but also the most unreported form of crime. After learning of the betrayal of a trusted employee, the truth is uncovered, revealing seniors who were fraudulently abused in their own homes. The stories reflect the vulnerability of our loved ones who placed their trust in their caregivers. Their worst fears became a reality, with many never even realizing it was happening to them. These crimes happen in our society, more than we want to acknowledge or admit. In many cases those who prey upon the elderly go unpunished, and easily move on to their next victim.

Moncton, N.B. resident J.W. Fraser has just released her first self-published memoir title, “Caregiver or Taker, The Faces of Betrayal.” With the aging population, and the many vulnerable seniors without family members, this book offers insight into a growing problem in our society. The book reveals shocking and heart-breaking stories, yet gives the readers a glimpse into the perils which face many unsuspecting seniors. Brantford-born Jackie Fraser Dunfield self-published a book about the experience. Jackie, who now lives in Moncton, N.B., has been in the fitness business and the real estate game since graduating from BCI in the early '70s. She finally settled into her true career, providing home care for seniors. Her agency in Moncton outsources homemakers, arranges meals and handles personal care. For seven years, Jackie supervised a woman who was assigned to one client the agency cared for on a 24/7 basis. Later, it turned out that the employee had been robbing the woman blind and the resulting two-year investigation by Jackie, and lack of action on the part of police, became fodder for her book, Caregiver or Taker. "It became more of a memoir of how devastating this whole thing was for me," says Jackie. "You don't like to think people are doing that kind of thing." The one incident wasn't the only time Jackie encountered financial abuse against seniors and she wanted to offer her insights into a growing problem in Canada. "Copies are now out in bookstores and it's starting to take off," Jackie says of the self-published book that's also available on www.lulu.com. "These crimes happen more than we want to acknowledge and, in many cases, those who prey upon the elderly go unpunished."
